The Key to Weight Loss Success

Weight training, cardio exercises, and aerobics may be included in the routine, as long as you can competently handle them. You'll also need a good diet plan to supplement the calorie loss. Natural weight loss should result in a leaner body, not a starving one.

You need to motivate yourself through the program. As is the case, there are few shortcuts to weight loss. Rapid weight loss is only effective if you stick to your program discipline to the dot. Keep yourself reminded of the day's workout plan, or if necessary, have a friend check in on your progress with weight loss. Natural weight loss is also not a self-made effort; you'll need the expert advice of a nutritionist, one who can provide a custom-made meal plan for your particular dietary needs. Your nutritionist will tell you which diets to stick to, and may be able to warn you in advance of any crash diets which you may mistake for a best loss program. Weight management, done in a scientific and healthy way, leads to better chances for long-term success.

As part of your discipline, you have to have some degree of accountability. This prevents the possibility of exercise loss. Weight gain is too much the result of a failure to make yourself true to your personally-set goals that you may end up punishing yourself for it, by eating more and doing less. The best way to discipline your way to healthy loss, weight control, and body toning is to withhold any perks until you perform your required regimen for the day; on the other hand, rewarding yourself after a workout is good reinforcement method towards achieving your goal.

Weight Loss Is Simple Math, Right?

There is much debate in the world of calories these days. The simplistic approach of just reducing caloric intake in order to lose weight has become scrutinized. Not necessarily because it's wrong, but because there's more to the story. Or is there? Let's take a look and see.

It has long been held that creating a caloric deficit, either by consuming fewer calories or by burning off more calories, is all that is needed in order to reduce weight. Simple math.

Calories In - Calories Out = Caloric Deficit/Surplus = Weight Loss/Gain

Take in more calories than you burn off...gain weight. Burn more calories that you consume...lose weight. In other words, regardless of what you eat, so long as you consume less calories than you burn off you will lose weight. Simple, right?

Yes, and that's the problem. Let me explain. Given that a gram of protein and a gram of carbohydrate both contain 4 calories, you would assume that consuming 50 grams of each would have the same effect on the body. After all, both would constitute a 200 calorie intake (btw, calories per gram of any given nutrient are averages and will vary from food source to food source...therefore, 2 grams of fat taken from two different food sources may actually have caloric discrepancies, even though fat in general is given a caloric content of 9 calories per gram). However, this is not the case. Data suggests that the thermic effect of nutrients will vary, with protein having the highest metabolic cost of the three macronutrients (protein the highest, then carbohydrate, then fat).

Therefore, simple math will tell you that if it takes more energy to metabolize 200 calories of protein than it does to metabolize 200 calories of carbohydrates, consuming 200 calories of each can't possibly be equal in terms of the effects it will have on weight loss efforts. In other words, simple math will tell you it's not simple math. Even within nutrients, there are differences in metabolic cost. For instance, fiber will have a higher metabolic cost than simple sugars.

So what is the message behind all of this? Counting calories is not good enough when it comes to achieving optimal weight loss. The composition of your meals will have an impact, and metabolic cost is one mechanism by which this will occur. Other factors that determine how you respond to the composition of your meals include hormonal responses, health status, and exercise habits...among others.

So while calories consumed is important, if you're not losing weight by simply cutting calories you need to consider other options. Taking a close look at the composition of your meals would be the ideal place to start.

However, if you have an on going medical condition, are being treated by a doctor or are obese, then it is wise to consult with your physician first.

There is no one diet that is suitable for everyone. It is necessary to do your research before changing your diet. It is important to learn everything that you can. Once you determine what it is that you are going to do, the chances are that you will do it for some time to come.

In the mean time, here are some quick tips that help you lose weight quickly.

The first is this: Rapid weight loss involves a variety of tools. This includes transforming your thinking, a realistic exercise program and in some instances, diet supplements. Find a diet plan that you can live with. Successful weight loss involves changing your diet, not going on a diet. Add to this some organic exercise program. What I mean by this is to stay away from the gym. Walking, running, swimming and riding a bicycle are activities that you can enjoy everyday and get some fresh air while you are at it.

Number two: Make your approach realistic. By focusing and creating the proper mindset you will be able to lose those extra pounds quickly and easily. Creating your goals with determination will help you to avoid becoming discouraged.

Three: Pay attention to your body. Everyone's metabolism is different. Different types hit their "wall" at different times in the process. Some people have a great deal of initial success. Others, and I have seen, can go weeks or even months before losing their first pounds. Do your homework first, then work your plan. Pay attention and make changes where necessary.

Number four: Eat foods that are fiber rich. This accomplishes so much. Fiber rich food is more satisfying. It cuts down on cravings. It cleans our digestive system. Foods rich in fiber burn more evenly. As a result, our moods even out. Whole grains and vegetables are rich in fiber. Use them in your weight loss regimen.

Five: Avoid fried foods. Stay away from fast food chains. Don't drink soda or any beverage that has either sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Point number six: This is contrary to almost everything that you read or hear. Do not drink a lot of fluid. Do drink when you are thirsty. We are not designed to be a plumbing system that has to be flushed continually. Too much fluid puts a strain on our kidneys and inhibits them from eliminating waste.

The secret to any weight loss effort is to focus and take action. Do your research, make a commitment and put into action what you what to achieve.
